The story behind the Irish Harp Wall Hanging
Fellow artists Brian Scott-McCarthy and Kathleen Smyth founded the Wild Goose Studio in 1970. Together with other leading Irish artists, they created a unique range of artefacts. They undoubtedly take their inspiration from our rich cultural heritage and the contemporary world. An inspiring thought, an image or an emotion starts the process and our craftspeople give it a physical form.
It starts with the marriage of an idea or meaning with an image. Subsequently this image is carved onto a sculpted piece. From this we create a mould so we can faithfully reproduce the image in full detail. The production process itself starts with metal powders such as bronze or cast iron. This forms the outer surface of the finished piece. They use a cold cast pouring to create the inner. Finally, the hidden beauty is revealed when the set piece is polished.
Inspiration comes from myriad different sources. Stone carvings and evocative language represent our Celtic history in most of the pieces. Furthermore contemporary authors, philosophers, and the moments and milestones in life that shape our human experience inspire others.
