The story behind your Aran jumper
The Aran Jumper takes its name from the islands of the West Coast of Galway, Ireland. Three islands – Inish Mór, Inis Méain and Inis Oírr, make up the Aran Islands. Fishing was the most common way for men from the islands to make their living, and they did so on the wild and angry Atlantic Ocean. The Aran jumper was created to withstand this environment, and was a popular element of the fisherman’s uniform.
Over the centuries, different styles and stitches emerged. The Aran stitches each had a meaning attached to them. The honeycomb stitch was said to symbolise the hard working bees of the islands, the diamond stitch was used to attract wealth, and the cable stitch was used for good luck. The Aran jumper has remained popular over the years, both with Irish and with visitors to the country. While the traditional styles will always be popular, there are constantly new styles created.
