The story behind your piece of Connemara marble.

The wild, rugged landscape of Connemara is home to this serpentine-rich rock. Experts estimate this marble to date back to 600 million years ago. Your piece of Connemara Marble began as lime mud sediment, in the pre-Cambrian era. Subsequently, it underwent exposure to immense pressure and high temperatures during mountain formation. As a result of this process, the limestone changed to a metamorphic rock, resulting in Connemara marble.

The marble shows interlocking bands of serpentine in various shades of green, sepia and grey. Differences in the depths of quarrying means that the shades vary considerably. As well as serpentine, this marble contains diopside, chlorite, dolomite and calcite.

Due to the limited availability, it is one of the rarest marbles in the world. No two pieces are identical. It is famous the world over for its beauty, its colour and its resistance. It’s extremely hard and polishes well, and so is an ideal decorative facing stone. Connemara Marble adorns the State Capital Building in Pennsylvania (U.S.A), Trinity College Dublin (IRE),  Westminster Cathedral (UK) and the floor of Peacockes Hotel.
