The story behind your Aran jumper
The Aran Jumper takes its name from the islands of the West Coast of Galway, Ireland. Three islands – Inish Mór, Inis Méain and Inis Oírr, make up the Aran Islands. Owing to their location, fishing was the most common way for men from the islands to make their living, and they did so on the wild and angry Atlantic Ocean. As a result of this harsh environment, the Aran jumper was created. It was a popular element of the fisherman’s uniform.
Over the centuries, different styles and stitches emerged. Consequently the different Aran stitches each had a meaning attached to them. For example, the hard working bees of the islands were symbolised by the honeycomb stitch. Wealth was attracted using the diamond stitch. Furthermore the cable stitch was used for good luck. The Aran jumper has remained popular over the years. This popularity is both with Irish and with visitors to the country. While the traditional styles will always be popular, there are constantly new styles created. As well as the original jumpers, there are now a wide range of accessories, and home wares available in the Aran style.
